Healthy Food Africa Consortium

In the week of 14-20 of October the Healthy Food Africa consortium meeting took place in Nairobi and Kisumu (Kenya). Concerning the goal of transforming food systems in Africa, the lessons learned so far from the discussions are:
1. The need to focus on industry-based solutions in scalable capacity building.
2. In the light of challenges such as climate change, food system transformation solutions at local scale cannot ignore the global scale. We need to be more global than ever.
3. It is essential to look at the food production process from a consumer perspective. How do consumers perceive the way their food is produced?
4. The promotion of healthier options (for people and for planet) needs to be done in a more assertive manner to match the pushy methods which have been used to promote unhealthy choices.
5. We need to pay more attention to cross-sectoral impacts of actual change in the food system. How does a change in consumption patterns actually impact production and distribution and vice versa? We need to move beyond assumptions in the light of these linkages
